You won't likely be seeing UMS ever brought back in a future Android OS version. So if all this is any indication of where the technology is headed, I think the answer is obvious. If the phone had no SD card, we would be stuck with however much internal memory it contained.

By using SD Cards, we can add as much as 64GB of memory. That's easily 3X the price of even a Class 10 16GB SD card. If you want the added 16GB of internal memory (over the 16GB model) to get 32GB fine, but it costs you $100. And of course it would also be somewhat of a cash cow. To me it looks very much more like the cell carriers being in total control of smartphones and their software than a move to help app developers. Personally, I don't buy that BS.Ībandoning SD Cards is a huge leap backwards in technology, taking us back to when the initial smartphones had only what the cell carriers deemed suitable to put on them.

He claimed it would make it easier for developers to program across the many different devices this way. In the post he explained the end goal was that ALL Android devices no longer even HAVE a removable SD card, and only have internal memory.

When I first started researching this USB Mass Storage (UMS) issue after flashing an ICS ROM on my tablet and encountering it, (the internet is FULL of people complaining about it) I ran across a support forum somewhere in which a Samsung tech rep was explaining the reason that ICS developers no longer wanted to support USM, and wanted to adopt the Windows Media Transfer (MTP) and Picture Transfer (PTP) protocols instead. Had the following installed (Ready to use) on Win 7:ġ0) See the following SCH-I535 directories on my Windows 7 64-bit desktop: Menu -> Settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging option checkedĨ) Hook up USB cable (had better luck with one shipped with phone)

With my luck I will be back to square one tomorrowġ) Boot into Windows 7 safe mode and delete and previous SAMSUNG USB drivers without phone attached In the end however, there are no guarantees since the USB connection with this phone can be particularly finicky. Don't know if this will help anyone, but I finally got the USB drivers working on Windows 7 64 bit for my Samsung Galaxy 3.įor me, it boiled down to getting a clean install of the USB drivers and using the supplied USB cable.
